Zarr's February 2005 Newsletter

Using the web to generate sales from your existing customers

Welcome to Zarr's newsletter, bringing you the very latest ideas and information on how the Internet can play an important role in growing your business. If you know someone who would benefit from reading some of the ideas contained within the newsletter please forward it on.

Feature: Idea for improving web-visitor experience
How often have you visited a website and been disappointed? Information is difficult to find, you can’t buy things easily because there are flaws in the on-line payment system or you’d like to be able to pass on information to a friend or colleague but the site has been protected in some way so that you can’t get a copy of the article or fact sheet.

Unfortunately too many businesses ignore some basic principles of customer service and common sense when they build their sites. Here are a few simple ideas that can improve the customer experience, help spread the word about your site and ultimately encourage more sales.

Information at their finger tips
If you want people to spread the word about your website give them a reason to do so, and make it easy for them. What do visitors want from your site? Industry news, technology updates, hints and tips, articles and reviews can all be useful nuggets of information which people want to share. Simple online tools such as “Tell a colleague” facilitate the online referral process by allowing visitors to tell someone else about a specific web page and add their own comments.

Customer Service
Do your customers need access to detailed information such as the latest legal documentation or technical product information? If so would a customer area on your website enhance the level of customer service given? Customers could be automatically notified when new documents are added taking the hassle out of the search process for them. The benefits are obvious for the customer but you can also benefit from the better understanding you get of them by seeing which documents they access.

Call to Action
If you are trying to cross sell services or launch new products on your website ensure you include a highly visible and interactive call to action. In other words think about what you want people to do and ensure your website supports these “calls to action”. Do you want visitors to complete an enquiry form or arrange a face to face demonstration? Ensure your website is designed to stimulate this.

Summary
Forward thinking companies are using the web to offer visitors a great customer experience. They know the foundation to a good business is happy customers and as such as willing to invest in working on customer service. This can be by giving customers access to useful information through a customer area, or even giving a certain amount of information away for free to all visitors to their website. Either way they are creating an online advantage by combining information with visible calls to action.

Top Tip: Use online tools hand in hand

Regularly updating your website is unlikely to stimulate a large number of repeat visitors in isolation. Combine regular updates with interesting HTML newsletters, highlighting new articles and information on your website and you are likely to find a significant increase in the number of visitors to your website.
