With an ever growing interest in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, companies are now reforming from the ‘old fashioned’ social networking of exchanging business cards and filing important numbers into a rolodex by using the internet social networking sites as a way to contact their clients and advertise their business.

The internet has become a strong and effective way for businesses to reach their consumer base. The use of social networking sites give companies a way to reach a wider audience and also a way to establish a community. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter make information readily available from a touch of a button, allowing clients and potential future clients to view the latest news and updates. These sites are an extremely efficient and simple way to enhance interactions between you and your clients. Users can reply to updates or converse with the business and other users on message boards.

Companies use social networking sites to gain credibility, gain customer relationships and undoubtedly to boost sales. Social networking sites aid businesses to grow and also to increase customer volume. Facebook for example, allows passers-by to browse businesses that they may not have spotted elsewhere.

Facebook have a variety of ways in which you can establish a community, giving clients/potential clients an insight into your business and any information they may require. They are as follows :-

  • Creating a group - Allows users to join and follow the latest news and updates. The company can post links and videos, and a message board is set up for community conversations. 
  • Fan pages - Reflects the company as a whole, instead of maybe just one person representing the company online. 
  • Full profile – You are able to add relevant applications, providing more detailed information about the company’s mission and goals, and just generally a more personal feel.

Twitter is a Social Networking and Microblogging service that enables its users to send and read other user messages called tweets.

In simplest terms, Twitter is a free service that allows you to say almost anything to anybody in 140 characters or less. It allows the user to network and communicate with contacts new and old. With 100 million users worldwide it is an excellent way to promote your business.
